April 19 2017. Building designers now have a valuable resource for the design of castellated and cellular beams in AISC's Design Guide 31: Castellated and Cellular Beam Design. This latest addition to AISC's design guide series provides technical guidance for the design of steel buildings using castellated and cellular beams.

Cellular beams are a form of beam with multiple regular web openings, formed by splitting two rolled sections longitudinally, to form two Tee sections. The two Tees, which may not come from the same donor section (as discussed below) are then welded together to form an I-section with web openings which have a characteristic shape (normally, but not necessarily, circular).

Cellular beams are considered to be already fabricated. Cellular beams are used as structural members and the main advantage is that the beam depth and strength are increased without adding additional material. A cellular beam is produced by cutting a beam lengthwise following a circular pattern.

Cellular Beams. Cellular beams are the modern form of the traditional Castellated Beam. Westok cellular beams comprise a beam formed by profiling a rolled section using our patented, semi-circular dual pass process. The two tees are separated by half a pitch and the beam is welded back together. The resulting cellular beam has a continuous ...

The popularity of cellular beams has been rapidly increasing in recent decades. They have many advantages for a building project.

ACB ® and Angelina ® beams, with their circular and sinusoidal large web openings, elegantly combine function with flexibility. Alternatives to trusses and open-web joist systems, beams with large web openings are lightweight, long-spanning, structural elements that …

Erection of Steel Beams. Various prefabricated beam sections are available to be used in the construction multi storey steel frame structure. Beams commonly transfer loads from floors and roof to the columns. Steel beam members can span up to 18m, but the most usual range of steel beam spans rang from 3m to 9m.

Create Westok cellular, Westok plated or Fabsec beams. Tekla Structural Designer also allows you to create Westok Cellular, Westok Plated or Fabsec beams, if that is necessary in your model. For more information, see the following instructions. On the Model tab, click the arrow next to Steel Beam. In the list, select the desired beam type.

Steel Deck. Steel deck is a cold formed corrugated steel sheet supported by steel joists or beams. It is used to support concrete or insulating membrane of a roof. It was developed to provide a structurally efficient product for use in roof and floor systems. Its design and fabrication maximizes the properties of the steel in order to create a ...

Cellular steel beams have circular patterns in their webs and are designated as LB sections in the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Design Guide 31. Their design uses steel efficiently to achieve long spans ideal for routing of mechanical systems within buildings. Safe open illuminated spaces perfect for parking garages, bus ...

The performance of cellular beams was investigated by Kuchta and Maslak . Their study of cellular beam stability showed that the design procedures of cellular beams should differ significantly from the solid parent beam. Therefore, the design equations of cellular steel beam were presented [1,,, ].

Cellular beams are one of the most important developments in heavy steel engineering, and we are specialists in this field. Steelwork contractors are turning to this simple and cost-effective option in ever increasing numbers as its versatility and strength is recognised, and Jamestown Steel …

Cellular beams can be fabricated from rolled UB or UC steel sections. They are produced by cutting rolled steel sections longitudinally and re-welding them to create deeper beams …

Cellular beam is a further development of the traditional castellated beam. The advantage of the steel beam castellation process is that it increases strength without adding weight, making both versions an inexpensive solution to achieve maximum structural load capacity in building construction.. The difference between cellular beam and castellated beam is the visual characteristic.

Cellular Beams. There are many advantages of designing with FABSEC ® long span cellular composite beams. The section design may be optimised in FBEAM ® to produce the most efficient solution first time, with the beam weight usually substantially less than plain steel beams. The unrivalled cell geometry and position permitted in FABSEC ...

The spanning capacity between supporting beams is comparable to a metal deck floor with panel depths typically in the range 120 – 160mm. Westok cellular beams and CLT share the following characteristics which make them ideal when used in combination: Factory controlled manufacture ensuring defect free and dimensionally accurate delivery to site

Castellated or cellular beam is also called as perforated beams which are widespread essential parts in steel structures. Many researchers have been performed numerical and experimental investigation with the intention to study the response of castellated beams to the different loading.

The cellular steel beams tested in, underwent web distortional buckling (WDB) that followed by web-post buckling (WPB). The cellular steel beam tested in, having a length of 1.5 m, underwent local web buckling (LWB) followed by steel beam yielding (SY). The SY failure mode was predicted from the finite element model by comparing the Von Mises ...

Steelwork contractors are turning to this simple and cost-effective option in ever increasing numbers as its versatility and strength is recognised, and Jamestown Steel is frequently the supplier of choice.

This paper presents a numerical study of a new composite beam system with a steel cellular beam, metal deck flooring and using demountable shear connectors. According to the experimental study, this composite beam system made the demounting, reassembly and member reuse possible, and did not compromise the loading capacity.

Composite floors with cellular long span secondary steel beams Although steel solutions are appropriate for short spans (typically 6 to 9 m), steel has an important advantage over other materials in that long span solutions (between 12 and 18 m) can be easily provided. This has the key advantage of column-free space, allowing future ...

beams (distortion) are also treated in Zirakian (2006), Lakusic (2008), and Ellobody (2012). Other investigations related to instabilities of cellular or castellated beams may also be found in the literature, such as the flexural buckling behavior (Sweedan 2009, Verwij 2010), or beam …

Cellular Beam Design - Kloeckner Metals UK. Date. Fri 03 2014. Category. Construction. Westok pioneered the development of structural steelwork software covering the analysis and design of cellular beams in the 1990s, and the software has been progressively updated to include Ultra Shallow Floor Beams ® to BS and more recently EC design codes.

RAM SBeam is a powerful and versatile program for the design of castellated and cellular steel beams. Using one of several design codes, RAM SBeam can select the optimum size or check the adequacy of existing construction, as well as provide design parameter ranges to allow freedom for the fabricator to determine a cutting pattern that eliminates unnecessary web hole infills.

The castellated/cellular beam is produced by cutting a beam length wise following a hexagonal/circular pattern. The top and bottom halves are then staggered and welded together to create a deeper, stronger beam. Using GRAITEC PowerPack on top of Autodesk Advance Steel, it is possible to create castellated/cellular beams from catalogues or user ...

Castellated steel manufacturers are rare in the U.S. CMC Steel Group/ SMI Steel Products of Rockwall, Texas fabricated the cellular steel used at Pioneer Hall, and calls its product the "SmartBeam" design. They don't manufacture the steel by simply punching or cutting holes in the web of the beam.

A new design method is developed for lateral-torsional buckling resistance of the castellated beams based on the 2T approach where all the geometrical properties are calculated at the opening location (Sonck and Belis 2016a) and a similar design approach based on EC3 is formulated with a modified cross-section properties for cellular steel ...
