To me, using grease on the OD of the seal is like using oil or grease to seat the bead on a tire. I use brake cleaner to install seals. However - you should use a light grease (NLGI #1 or #1.5) in the seal lips. For the crankshaft seals, I use a synthetic heavy oil as grease at high speeds can create a lot of shear heat.

The only thing i can think of is that if there isnt any lube weather it be oil, grease etc the first time the engine fires up the dry crank can heat up and possibly melt the rubber seal due to friction. Im not a pro engine builder but ive been told this by alot of guys who do build engines.
