Instead of being put right in the creek like a hand sluice, an engine with a water pump and some hoses gets the water up from the stream into the sluice or highbanker.

Now if you really want to play it on the cheap, build a power sluice*. There are several designs among which the P&S is a good one. Buy a Chinese pump and plenty of lay-flat hose. Get a 18 gallon tote and a few 5 gallon buckets. Make or buy a 4 mesh classifier. You will need a tarp and a folding chair. A long-handle #2 shovel is right handy.
