Linotype is useful for making Lyman #2 alloy. Great alloy for rifle bullets. But you will need some pewter (tin) and pure lead to do it. Linotype by itself is too hard to be of much use in making boolits. To make a good alloy for pistol boolits you could use 40# pure, 3.3# of lino and 0.75# of pewter.

I have read Monotype is harder than Linotype. Is there a way to look at the two. To distinguish between the two. The reason for this question, I ordered a box of Linotype. This was advertised as Linotype. In the past all the Linotype I have gotten was in 1/8 x ½ x 6 or 8 inch strips. The box I got the other day was all single letters on 1/8x1/8 by ½ inch.

LGS has some scrap lead that looks like the world's biggest window sash weights. Owner was pretty sure it's linotype. They are a little over one foot long, roughly three sided (1.5" on a side) with about a 2" eye molded into one end. We were thinking they might be Linotype pigs but we've never seen one. If you buy all of the sheet lead it will be 75 cents a pound. I've not totaled how much all of the rolls weigh but have weighed them individually. The lead ingot will be $60.00. Well, I have 100 pounds of range lead on hand, one heavy equipment lead counter balance weight( I think its 50 to 60 pounds, maybe more), 12 pounds of tin and one pig of linotype. The lead from DO-IT was much much cleaner. You are better off paying more upfront and getting the cleaner led. Save your money these are not worth it.

I purchased this linotype metal to add to range lead to harden it for casting bullets. The addition of about 1 lb. of linotype to 5 lbs. of range lead appears to provide a hardness similar to #2 alloy (without actually using a hardness tester), The #2 alloy is my preferred bullet-casting metal and range lead with linotype added is my second choice.

Cast your ingots first as a means of cleaning up your lead. That way when you cast bullets the dirt and rubbish wont go in your moulds. Tip the left overs from each casting session back into the ingot moulds and use letter stamps to stamp each ingot with a "SO"(Stick on) or a "CO" (Clip on) because they all look the same in ingot form.

Bill: When melting down the wheel weights keep your pot temp. below 700 F and the zinc will float. Quickly remove the floaters with the clips. That said, some induce 1% into their mix for hardening effect. You've seen the results. As long as it casts well and doesn't bust the tooling should be fine for paper shooting.

So I've got about 40 or 50 lbs I got for quite cheap of some sort of alloy that was said to be linotype alloy. The alloy is in long strips 24"long by 3/4" wide by .050 thick and wrapped about 20 at a time in brown paper. I tried casting some rifle bullets from it and they kept coming out rather frosty looking compared to my usual fairly "dull mirror" like cast bullets.
