Girth Gear Applications Girth gears fall into two basic categories; flange mounted and tangential spring mounted. Flange-mounted girth gears, the more common of the two, are most frequently utilized in "cold" processing equipment such as SAG (semi autogenous grinding) mills and ball mills for use in the mining and cement industries.

This notebook documents the procedure to find spur gear geometry based on design requirements. Inputs to the design are required gear ratio, center distance, standard pressure angle, backlash, and tip-to-root clearance. The outputs are tip, base, root diameters, contact ratio, profile shift, addendum modification, and tooth thickness.

Gears can mesh as shown in the Figure 2.6, however, it is important to consider a proper backlash (play) so that the gears can work smoothly. Backlash is a play between tooth surfaces of paired gears in mesh. Mating gears also have a clearance (play) vertical to tooth depth.
