Both Chevron (Chevron CRUSH process) and Shell (Shell in-situ conversion process or ICP for short) recently stopped their oil shale engagements at the Western Slope. Companies have conceived different approaches to produce oil from shale.
During the ex situ process, oil shale is first extracted from the earth by surface or underground mining. The rock is crushed, and then retorted (heated) to release the shale oil. The shale oil is then refined of impurities, such as sulfur.
From the retort the crushed shale goes to a hopper where any residual oil is stripped out by superheated steam leaving a char on the crushed shale. The stripped shale is fed into a furnace wherein the char is burned to provide heat for the process.
Abstract. The Petrobras oil shale retorting process, utilizes the particle range of +1/4 inch - 3 1/2 inches. The UPI plant in Sao Mateus do Sul has over 106,000 hours of operation, has processed over 6,200,000 metric tons of shale and has produced almost 3,000,000 barrels of shale oil. However, the nature of the raw oil shale is such that the ...
In this study, the shale samples were crushed to an ultrafine particle size (<200 meshes, i.e., 0.074 mm) and then dried for 12 h prior to the experiments. A Siemens XRD 6100 analyzer was used to scan 0-70°. The experimental procedure followed the SY/T 5163-2010 standard. 2.2.2. Total organic carbon content
Flux Stone: Crushed limestone is used in smelting and other metal refining processes. In the heat of smelting, limestone combines with impurities and can be removed from the process as slag. Portland Cement: Limestone is heated in a kiln with shale, sand, and other materials and ground to a powder that will harden after being mixed with water.
shale yields about 100 grams of oil as compared to a kilogram of catalyst which may be used to process hundreds of kilograms of petroleum. Thus the cost of preparing the crushed oil shale may be very significant relative to the oil produced. As a …

Crushed Shale. Crushed Shale, also known as hardcore, clause 804 or 1 1/2″ down, is a fine crushed stone that's essential as a base for all paving, path and driveway projects. Category: Aggregates. Description.
Shale Blaes; Where does it come from? Our crushed/ screened/ fill products are reclaimed from construction, demolition and excavation waste and range from recycled aggregate to shale blaes. How do we produce our crushed/ screened products? The process is different depending on the product. It can go through all or a combination of the steps below.
Crushed gravel driveways are commonly composed of sand, silt, clay and larger aggregates (pebbles and small stones). Stone driveways, by contrast, are often more elegant. The source of the confusion over terminology is that the small stone used in stone driveways is sometimes also referred to as "gravel."
Crushed stone is an angular form of construction aggregate, made by breaking quarried rock into fragments that may be sorted, sized, and recombined into a variety of products. Crushed stone is typically quarried—that is, mined using benching methods (carrying out work from a ledge in a mine or quarry) and explosives, as opposed to the mechanical digging used for extracting …
In the process, crushed shale is fed into the retort at the top, through a feeder designed to prevent horizontal segregation. The shale moves downward through drying, heating and retorting zones against an up-flowing stream of heated recycle gas.
To make cement, crushed limestone and shale are heated to a temperature that is high enough to evaporate off all water and break down the limestone into calcium oxide and carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide is lost as an emission, but the calcium oxide combined with the heated shale makes a powder that will harden if mixed with water and allowed ...
Crushed stone is then passed through different screeners to be organized and stored in different piles according to their size. The screening process starts by removing larger stones, then medium stones, and eventually goes all the way down to the stone dust.
given by Barrell (1914) as: shale, 8.2 percent; sandstone, 14.8 per cent; limestone, 5.3 percent; and all sedimentary rocks, 8.5 percent. Additional data since the publication of Barrell's summary indicate that the average value of 8.2 percent for the porosity of shale may be low. Oil shale which is abundant, readily crushed to a size appropriate for use in this invention, and easily processed for removal of adsorbed oil is the preferred adsorbent for use in this process.

Shale as driveway base2. I have a 1000' driveway on raw land and the escavator is just about finished with the base. He is proposing Milify fabric, then a base of shale on top of 1st base. The reason for the shale is that when escavating, he discovers a shale "quarry" on my property and its using the shale for the primary base too.
Using crushed shale samples to obtain pore information from the gas adsorption experiments is a widely used method. Previous studies have evaluated the impact of the particle size on the pore size distribution, but potential pore shape damage during the crushing process has not been thoroughly investigated. In this paper, we crushed and sieved the same shale samples into …
Shale has many commercial uses. It is a source material in the ceramics industry to make brick, tile, and pottery. Shale used to make pottery and building materials requires little processing besides crushing and mixing with water. Shale is crushed …

Shale oil extraction is an industrial process for unconventional oil production. This process converts kerogen in oil shale into shale oil by pyrolysis, hydrogenation, or thermal dissolution. The resultant shale oil is used as fuel oil or upgraded to meet refinery feedstock specifications by adding hydrogen and removing sulfur and nitrogen impurities.. Shale oil extraction is usually …

Moisture equilibration of as-received samples. The moisture equilibration process is detailed in ASTM Standard D1412-07 and begins with vacuum saturating crushed samples with water as shown (Fig. 1a, b) in steps 1 and 2. Five duplicate samples weighing 20 g with a particle size of 1.4 mm were placed in a conical flask, and 100 ml of deionized water (18.2 MΩ …
Cheaper shale is the natural, untreated rock. The more-expensive shale gravel is "expanded shale," kiln-heated to make it porous for better drainage. Expanded shale is best for clay-based soils, especially in areas prone to flash flooding. Crushed shale comes in neutral grey colors and occasionally reddish-brown or charcoal shades.
